New York State Bridge Authority Inspections
Overview

The New York State Bridge Authority does more than maintain the safety and function of six Hudson River crossings. They have to maintain public confidence in the bridges as well. The NYSBA understands the need for proactive bridge inspections. One bridge alone – the Newburgh Beacon Bridge –carries 25 million vehicle crossings a year. Since the 1920s, Modjeski and Masters (M&M) has partnered with the authority to conduct annual and biennial bridge inspections and to develop bridge rehabilitation, repair, and improvement plans. And we’re on call when they need an expert available immediately for unexpected situations.

Our most thorough examinations of the Hudson River Bridges are the biennial bridge inspections required to satisfy FHWA regulations. For these intensive procedures, we call upon an array of tools and techniques. They range from rappelling, for a true hands-on visual look at the bridge’s exterior, to using ultra sound on bridge pins to detect potential defects. In alternate years, we perform maintenance inspections that provide the NYSBA with an accurate assessment of deficient areas from which they base their annual maintenance program. M&M has enjoyed a long history with three of the six Hudson River Bridges. We designed the Mid-Hudson Bridge – recognized as one of the most beautiful bridges in America – as well as both spans of the Newburgh Beacon Bridge. Our unique first-hand knowledge allows us to perform bridge inspection services as efficiently as possible.
