Kanawha Trestle Rail-to-Trail

Overview

The Kanawha Trestle is an inactive single track railroad bridge crossing the Kanawha River. The overall structure is approximately 4,200’ in length and is comprised of spans of various types and lengths, including timber trestle spans, steel deck girder spans and 4 through-truss spans. This will be a vital link in the Kanawha Trestle Trail, which is being developed as a multi–use non-motorized trail system to connect the Mound in South Charleston to the State Capitol.

Modjeski and Masters performed an inspection of the deck level for entire length of structure, including ultra-sonic testing of several pins in the trusses. The results of the inspection were used to assess whether the structure could be feasibly converted to pedestrian use. 3-D renderings were developed to help stakeholders visualize the preferred concept. The project is currently awaiting funding.

Bridge Geometry
Length of Main Span 415 Feet
Total Project Length 4,200 Feet
Lanes on Structure Pedestrian Walkway

This project will take an unused railway and convert it into a wonderful trail for all West Virginians to enjoy, eventually stretching from the Mound in South Charleston to the Capitol Complex. And it will enable people to stroll across the beautiful Kanawha River without the rumblings and shakings caused by vehicular traffic. What a great addition to Charleston’s waterfront and surrounding communities.
