Modjeski and Masters Selected as Prime Consultant for I-81 and State Route 115 Interchange Reconstruction Project

MECHANICSBUG, PA | Modjeski and Masters today announced its selection as prime consultant by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 4 for the I-81 and State Route 115 Interchange Reconstruction project.

As prime consultant, Modjeski and Masters will provide engineering and environmental services that include establishing a new connection between State Route 115 northbound and Interstate 81 southbound, replacing the bridges carrying State Route 115 over Interstate 81 and over Ramp L, and drainage improvements for the interchange.

“This is a significant win for the team, as it is our first PennDOT prime project selection in over eight years,” said Christopher Smith, PE at Modjeski and Masters. “Being selected for this role is a true testament to our efforts in building trusted relationship with clients, and the team is honored and thrilled to be using both its engineering and environmental expertise to enhance the overall safety and mobility on I-81 and State Route 115.”

The major roadways of the project, Interstate  81 and State Route 115, haven’t been updated since their original design and construction in the 1960s. Traffic volume is at 25,000 to 50,000 vehicles daily, which is projected to increase as the region continues to develop.

Modjeski and Masters will act as the structures task manager and will work alongside subconsultant McTish, Kunkel & Associates for the highway design, maintenance, and protection of traffic. Other partners will perform the remainder of the services required for the project including utility coordination, field survey, geotechnical, and environmental services.

The remaining aspects of a future project in the project area include expanding the Interstate to three lanes between Exit 164 to Exit 168, realigning 2.5 miles of roadway on I-81 southbound, replacing eight bridges, removing a left-hand Exit I-81 northbound, and addressing a faulty weave distance between SR 0029 and SR 0309 on I-81 northbound.

The contract has an estimated value of $25 million for construction and $4 million for design and is scheduled to last approximately five years.

The project is expected to begin with Final Design in early 2021 and construction is anticipated to be completed in 2026.
