"Outstanding Rehabilitated Bridge Award" Received for RK-23 Project

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY | Modjeski and Masters today announced its selection for the 2019 "Outstanding Rehabilitated Bridge Award” from the ABCD Susquehanna Chapter. The firm was recognized for its Robert F. Kennedy Bridge Manhattan Approach Ramps Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Project (RK-23) in New York City.

The Annual ABCD Bridge Awards Program recognizes bridges that have been designed, fabricated, or owned by a member of the ABCD Susquehanna Chapter. The awards were presented at a chapter dinner on April 29, 2019 at The Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey Hotel in Harrisburg, Pa.

“We’re humbled that our prestigious group of peers in the Susquehanna Chapter recognized the innovation and value of our work on the RK-23 project,” said Mike Britt, President and CEO of Modjeski and Masters. “The reconstruction of the Manhattan approach ramps presented us with numerous challenges, requiring the use of unique and innovative methods to overcome. Winning an award like this demonstrates the quality of the rehabilitation work our firm provides, benefiting the communities we serve across the country by extending the life of the structures they rely on every day.”

Originally constructed in 1936, the Manhattan approach ramps to the Robert F. Kennedy bridge had no major rehabilitation performed since its original construction. Due to the effects of chronic deterioration, Modjeski and Masters led the comprehensive rehabilitation effort of the steel portion of the structure using a number of innovative techniques to complete this project within the congested urban environment including: Expanded-Polystyrene (EPS) geofoam fill to minimize negative environmental impact, temporary ramps to maintain traffic for the nearly 85,000 daily vehicles the bridge typically accommodates, and a seismic isolation system to ensure the bridge can resist a 2,500-year return period event with minimal damage due to the structure’s importance as an emergency evacuation route.
