In recent
years, there has been a national emphasis on repair, rehabilitation and
replacement of existing bridges. Modjeski and Masters has risen to the
challenge and emerged as a leader in this arena.
The demands of repairing and rehabilitating existing bridges often require
the application of more sophisticated technology and problem-solving skills
than the designing of new structures.
The use of modern investigative and computer modeling techniques allows us
to better understand the behavior of bridges so that appropriate diagnoses
can be made. Combining that with our firsthand knowledge of specification
development, innovative design approaches, and technical expertise acquired
from years of experience yields repair and retrofit details which give
structures longer life in a cost-effective manner.
For example, seismic retrofit of existing bridges requires a unique
combination of theoretical and practical knowledge. Staff from Modjeski and
Masters have been participating in the development of seismic criteria for
over 30 years and have produced seismic retrofit plans for bridges in all
seismic zones in the contiguous states.
It is through the restoration of old bridges, including many original
Modjeski and Masters’ designs, that we assure safe operations of past
designs well into the future and simultaneously facilitate re-use of
existing corridors and maximize return of the owners’ investment.
