Project Information: The Robert Moses Causeway Bridge is a side by side double leaf trunnion bascule bridge crossing a 100 foot wide navigable channel called the “State Boat Channel” with an approximately 36 foot wide deck. The southbound bridge was constructed in 1950. At that time traffic was carried in both directions between Captree and Jones Island in Captree State Park. The adjacent northbound bridge was constructed in 1965. Submarine cables were installed to operate both bridges from the northbound control house and one-way traffic was instituted on each bridge. Modjeski and Masters, Inc. as a subconsultant to URS Corporation, performed strain gage balance testing on all four leaves. The work was performed to set a starting point for the current rehabilitation. URS will use our data from the instrumentation results, factor in the new weight changes in the rehabilitation and produce details in the Contract Documents for appropriate final balance conditions. |
