Project Information: The Goethals Bridge consists of a through truss span, girder spans and slab spans and has a total length of 7,500 feet. The bridge is one of the most heavily traveled structures connecting New Jersey with Staten Island. Modjeski and Masters began the project by providing the Client with an in-depth condition inspection of the structure directly supporting the concrete deck including hammer tapping the deck itself. These inspections were all performed using in-house personnel. The findings were summarized in a comprehensive deck condition inspection report. After the inspection work was completed, Modjeski and Masters’ scope of work was increased through the addition of a supplemental design contract to facilitate rehabilitation of the existing concrete deck, replace all deck expansion joints, perform miscellaneous steel repairs and replace the sidewalks. The rehabilitation work included civil, structural, and electrical elements. The Firm provided engineering services for both the preliminary and final design of the rehabilitation of the structure, including redecking and Maintenance and Protection of traffic. Comprehensive contract plans, specifications and construction cost estimates were developed. All construction was phased, performed at night and under traffic. |
