Project Information: The existing vertical lift bridge over the Reserve Basin is a lift span of 250 feet with approach spans of 75 feet. The current bridge carries three lanes of traffic with sidewalks and has a single set of tracks running down the center traffic lane. The structure provides a clear channel width of 200 feet and a vertical clearance above mean high water of 135 feet. The client desired a bridge with a vertical clearance of 150 feet (a 15-foot increase), and with a higher than 14-foot roadway clearance to accommodate taller railroad cars. In the past, Modjeski and Masters participated in previous modification/replacement studies and preliminary engineering services for this bridge, including a cursory inspection. Modjeski and Masters performed a study to determine various alternatives for the rehabilitation of the existing structure or a replacement/partial replacement of the structure. The study included advantages/disadvantages, comparative cost estimates, time required to complete project, environmental impact, ability to meet needs of river traffic and land traffic for each alternative solution. Based on the approved lift bridge solution, a detailed design package including plans, specifications, estimates, permits, and environmental documents were prepared for bid and construction. Miscellaneous repairs including structural steel repairs, fender system repairs and safety improvements were also included in the bid package. Support during contract bid, shop drawing review, and construction support engineering were also provided, including on-site construction inspection. |
