Project Information:

The intent of this project is to replace the existing, deteriorating Route 13 Bridge over the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River. The existing bridge is 850 feet in length and has a bascule channel span with a horizontal clearance of 125 feet. The replacement bridge will include a 250-foot vertical-lift channel span with a vertical clearance of 135 feet. The bridge will be replaced on the same alignment as the existing bridge.

Modjeski and Masters is providing engineering services for the preliminary and final design and construction services for all structural, mechanical, and electrical components. These services include: preliminary conceptual studies of alignment and bridge type; cost estimates; hydraulic and hydrologic studies; and final plans for the bridge and approach roadways, including signage, signalization, lighting, pavement marking, and CCTV surveillance system. During construction, a full-time engineer with previous movable bridge construction experience will be assigned to the site. Assistance with bidding and shop drawings checking will also be provided.
