Project Information: The Greater New Orleans Bridge No. 2 is a combined vehicular and transit bridge which spans the Mississippi River 400 feet north of and parallel to the existing Greater New Orleans Bridge. This long-span cantilever through truss has a main span of 1,595 feet and side spans of 853 feet and 590 feet. The navigational channel provides 150 feet of vertical clearance and 750 feet of horizontal clearance. Modjeski and Masters, Inc. provided engineering services for the preliminary and final designs of the cantilever through truss superstructure. Final contract plans, specifications and construction cost estimates were also developed. The substructure design, performed by another consultant, was reviewed by Modjeski and Masters, Inc. The Firm also provided construction engineering services. AASHTOs "Guide Specifications for Strength Design of Truss Bridges",
written by Dr. John M. Kulicki, P.E., of Modjeski and Masters, Inc. were employed for the
design and detailing of truss members for this structure. These specifications were
adopted by AASHTO as Tentative Specifications in 1984 and were adopted as Guide
Specifications in 1985. |
