Services Fixed Bridges → St. Croix River Bridge

Location:
Stillwater, Minnesota

Client:
Minnesota Department of Transportation

Project Information:

This extradosed river bridge crossing, consisting of 3400 feet of bridge with maximum spans of 470 feet, is located in the environmentally sensitive St. Croix river valley. Several extradosed bridge types were analyzed in the preliminary stages of the project. This will be the first extradosed bridge in the United States upon completion.

Modjeski and Masters, Inc., as a subconsultant to Edwards and Kelcey, participated in the Visual Quality Manual (VQM) development process. Our engineers developed 2D and 3D finite element analyses for the feasibility study of several alternatives, resulting in a detailed load sharing evaluation summary for each structure type.

To reduce maintenance on the bridge, the client requested that no deck joints exist on the river spans. Modjeski and Masters, Inc. performed analyses to determine the flexibility of the river piers and the overall feasibility of designing for a completely jointless river bridge.
