Project Information: Modjeski and Masters, Inc. was contracted to perform a system-wide inspection of steel bridges for Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR). A total of 928 bridges were inspected in a nine month period starting in August 2004 and ending in April 2005. The types of bridges inspected include through trusses, deck trusses, through plate girders, and deck plate girders on steel towers. Also included in the inspections were moveable structures such as bascule, swing and vertical lift bridges. Modjeski and Masters, Inc. has been providing this service every five years for Union Pacific, and formerly Southern Pacific, since 1989. The primary role of Modjeski and Masters, Inc. was to lead the inspections, review the inspection reports and perform appraisal ratings of the bridges. Union Pacific's rail system covers 21 states and is separated by four regions (Northern, Western, Central and Southern) with 12 to 14 bridge inspectors in each region. Each region is sub-divided by territories, with two UPRR inspectors per territory. Two Modjeski and Masters inspectors were on-site at a time, each in a separate region. The Modjeski and Masters inspectors were accompanied by a team of UPRR inspectors to each bridge. UPRR inspectors provided flagging and helped with the inspections. In three of the four regions, UPRR supplied a snooper truck to assist with the inspections. Modjeski and Masters provided uniformity throughout the entire system by identifying inconsistencies in describing levels of severity noted with deficiencies and assisted the UPRR inspectors in identifying problem areas and the causes associated with them. |
