Project Information:

The Bayview Bridge carries U.S. Route 24 across the Mississippi River between Quincy, Illinois and West Quincy, Missouri. The structure is a two lane cable-stayed bridge with a main channel span of 900 feet and side spans of 440 feet. The channel span provides a vertical navigable clearance of 63 feet and a horizontal navigable clearance of 870 feet.

Alternative structures in both concrete and steel were advanced to final design. The steel superstructure is supported by a double plane of stay cables in a fan type arrangement. Twenty eight cables are anchored into each transverse A frame shaped tower. The concrete superstructure is also supported by a double plane of stay cables in a fan arrangement. However, forty eight cables are anchored each transverse A frame shaped tower.

Modjeski and Masters, Inc. provided engineering services for the development of alternative designs for segmental concrete and steel cable-stayed bridges. Steel and segmental concrete alternative final contract plans, specifications and construction cost estimates for both superstructures and towers were developed. The Firm also provided engineering services relating to the aerodynamic testing of the steel and concrete superstructures.

Engineering services for the review of shop drawings and the contractor’s erection procedures were provided. During construction, a resident construction inspection advisor was stationed at the site.
