Project Information:

The new Martha Truss Bridge carries relocated County Route 31/6 over the Guyandotte River near the town of Martha, WV and replaces an existing single lane bridge consisting of four pin-connected through trusses on cut stone piers and abutments, circa 1880. The replacement structure is located approximately 300 ft downstream and eliminates 90-degree curves onto each end of the bridge and improves traffic flow in the area. The five parallel weathering steel girder superstructure is skewed to the river and curved on one end with spans of 84, 122, 175, 122 and 87 feet. The 47-foot wide cast-in-place concrete deck provides 2-12 foot traffic lanes, 2-8 foot shoulders and a 5-foot sidewalk. Bridge supports are wall type and cantilevered concrete piers with stub abutments. Foundations are spread footings on rock in the river, and driven steel piles for the approach piers.

Modjeski and Masters, Inc. provided engineering services for the design of the replacement structure and associated roadway and intersection work. Initial effort required a Preliminary Design Study to set the location for the new structure, followed by a Span Arrangement Study to set pier and abutment locations. A Type, Size and Location Study was performed, and subsequent work undertaken to complete the design and prepare construction plans, specifications and cost estimates. Shop drawing review and construction consultation services are included.
