Paris Road Bridge Vessel Collision Study

  • Overview

    The Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MRGO) was built in 1965 to facilitate economic development in the New Orleans region. This man-made channel runs 76 miles adjacent to the southern reaches of Lake Borgne. Enter the Paris Road Bridge. The Paris Road Bridge, or “Green Bridge” as it is known to locals, crosses the 650-ft wide Gulf Outlet just to the east of New Orleans. To evaluate the threat from vessel collision, The Louisiana Department of Transportation needed up-to-date information on the geometry and actual hull draft of ships passing under the bridge. And when the riverbed conditions at the site were found to have changed in recent years, they turned to the experienced vessel collision experts at Modjeski and Masters.
     
    Modjeski and Masters previously evaluated the Paris Road Bridge for the risk of vessel collision in 1994. Our resulting recommendations at that time included monitoring of the site conditions for any potential changes. For this latest effort, Modjeski and Masters reevaluated the bridge to document changes from river bottom scouring. We also surveyed current vessel sizes and operating speeds. Next, our knowledgeable team utilized this data to assess the risk of vessel collision and determine the probability of pier collapse. Modjeski and Masters then developed recommendations for pier protection and vessel collision prevention measures.
     
    Since this project was completed in 2003, Modjeski and Masters has performed multiple vessel collision studies and pier protection designs for LADOTD. For each bridge location, our problem solvers have assessed the risk of vessel collision and structural performance under ever-changing site conditions. We’ve helped LADOTD keep a watchful eye on their assets. We’ve helped them maintain great bridges.
