Our History:
Modjeski and Masters’ tradition as a leader in bridge engineering dates back to
1893. The firm is one of the oldest consulting engineering firms in the nation.
Having been in service for over 100 years, we are able to celebrate numerous
major projects across the nation.
Our Legacy:
In the early days,
there were few proven rules concerning bridge engineering. Instead, engineers relied on
their imagination, engineering skills and intuition. Few of the bridge pioneers had more
imagination, skill, intuition, and outright courage than Ralph Modjeski.
Born in Poland,
educated in France, he first considered a career as a concert pianist before deciding
engineering would be his life work. Ralph Modjeski was selected in 1908 to be the chairman
of the Board of Engineers for the final reconstruction of the double track rail and
highway Quebec Bridge over the St. Lawrence River. Many of his innovative ideas helped make this the longest bridge of its type
in the world.
Modjeski and Frank
M. Masters, who joined the firm in 1924, designed bridges that were an expression of the
country. These were big, bold, well-detailed, and designed to inspire, serve, and endure.
This same philosophy governs the firm's designs.
Today, Modjeski and Masters remains at the fore-front of state-of-the-art bridge and
highway engineering. As we enter our second century, we are continually evolving to
accommodate the search for new and better engineering methods. We continue to use our
imagination, professional skills, and intuition to lead the bridge engineering profession
into the future.
